The coat of arms, with much history behind it, was acquired by Bishop Gower in 1960. Gower (Welsh: Gŵyr) or the Gower Peninsula (Penrhyn Gŵyr) in southwest Wales, projects towards the Bristol Channel. It is the most westerly part of the historic county of Glamorgan. In 1956, the majority of Gower became the first area in the United Kingdom to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
